Hello everyone, I picked up a jem at a computer recycling facility. Its a Mac Pro 2.66 qx. It is in great shape just missing riser card (Ram) and video card. Can I perform any tests to see if the computer is still good before i buy the riser card and ram + a graphics card. When I turn the computer on, the power button blinks? Anyone have any info that can help me. This would be my first intel based Mac, since ive always used an dworked on only PPC

    Thanks

You must use TRIM Enabler (http://www.groths.org/?p=308) to enable TRIM on non-Apple SSD.

The iBook's screen display 1024x768 and is set to be able to mirror it's own display onto another (show exactly the same image as the actual iBooks' display). However, there is a screen spanning hack (http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html) which does three things.

It lets you run an external display at higher resolutions (easily making it up to a 17 inch monitor's 1280x1024 or whatever it is).

It lets you span the display. This means you can have different things on different displays, they're not merely mirrored.

And finally it voids your warrantee.

Haha, well I think it's a valid concern!! I mean I would hope that Apple wouldn't do that to us, but honestly I wouldn't be too surprised.

A HUGE part of Lion is the OS doing the multitasking so we don't have to think about it. That's why apple took away the little light below the apps. There is no "open" or "close".

Although, I suppose another thing about Lion is that every state gets saved. So if a window or safari tab were to close, then hypothetically it would open back exactly how it was??

I would assume that any open windows stay open (and no safari refreshing!) but can any of you Lioners out there confirm this?

You're comparing an orange to an apple, actually more like a tiny grape to an apple.

They are both based on the same OS X core but the code is much more optimized and slimmer on the iPad with much tighter hardware restrictions.

If the iPad devices are as powerful as our computers, we would not be experiencing any issues in Safari. You're talking about just 256MB of RAM in the first-gen iPad and 512MB in second-gen iPad which are able to handle the sites in Safari much better than it does in the first-gen iPad. Add 2GB-4GB to the iPad, Mobile Safari would be able to handle 20 sites without any refreshing required.

Secondly, Apple didn't take open/close lights away, it is now an optional setting in the Systems Preferences. The reason Apple did this is because they want to remove the idea of "open"/"closed" states. The software are starting to catch up to the hardware in terms of speed that we can leave applications and return to it in the same state. Apple wants to be able to introduce the concept of *resuming* apps, not *closed*. When you restart Lion with open apps, Lion will restart with the same open apps in the same state. This is the future on Mac OS X. No more closing required, especially with a fast SSD.

The hard drive/ssd in today's computers are much faster than the NANDs in the current iPad. Resuming an app is much faster than it would be on a modern computer. Look at how fast apps are resuming from the previous state in the iPad 2 and you can see how much the hardware difference is affecting the performance.

Also, the multitasking isn't a huge part of the OS, it's actually tiny. If you remove Cocoa, all the apps/framework and the GUI, the OS is probably less than 512MB (based on the open source darwin's binary iso size).

The other thing that you need to consider is the memory swap. Mac OS X have swap, iOS doesn't. Even if you run out of free memory on the Macs, you'll begin to switch to the harddrive/ssd to use as virtual memory.

    lol....

If photographers behaved how some of you guys do, I would quit every single forum...

Q: "Hey guys, took a few shots, looking for some pointers on where to improve..."
A: "!#!#%#!!! Blah blah blah school 10 years undervalued degrading industry blah blah !#%@!!!!! eff off buddy!!!!"

But in crankypant's defense, it is helpful to include an image/example in the Original Post so we actually know that you are not simply "Trying to get free work done".

OP: I would go with citenzens idea of the birds, otherwise I have found that the only good way to "Create" clouds (besides excellent freehand draw/paint skills) is to clone existing clouds and use a combination of brushes and layers to blend them. into the shape you want.

It's perhaps worth looking at typography and how to create a bit of space around the text. If you look at Apple's website they don't cram everything in to a small space like that.

Also, MacBook should have capital letters, along with the first letter of the sentence. I would maybe make the computer a bit more beige as well at the moment it looks a bit gold (or tobacco stained beige), rather than beige. Good try though.

Well that's I reploed to your breaking dreams comment from earlier.

Is the green hippie thing under the fan favorite banana drunk yet? :p

BOT: redAPPLE, I'm sure you're having fun reading this BS+1, but if you don't have Photoshop, you don't have any idea what you're missing.

If I were to do a mockup of an Apple PowerMac, I'm looking at my Cube, thinking why do I have to lift it up to plug in-remove the phone line or plug in the iPod? So there's an idea. I look at my father's PowerMac G3 Blue/White, thinking maybe the thing shouldn't process data so loudly. And why not make that a metallic blue, instead of a part/translucent color? And why not stuff a Superdrive in there? Now that would be a real cool idea. But doing anything metallic and a light reflection would require some sort of Photoshop render.

Since you're asking whether it would be moral rather than whether it would be legal, I would say YES, since you did pay for it and since nobody is being adversely affected by your downloading it.

In the great wealth, the great firmament of this forum's generosity, the particular choice may perhaps be found by future generations as a trifle eccentric, but the mere fact of it -- the prodigal, pure, human kindness of it -- must be seen as a beautiful star in that firmament which shines upon me at this moment.

I'm just spurting this off the top of my head. Walmart.com has some preowned video games, and may just have preowned iPods from time to time. Don't quote me though.

You could also start a "Want To Buy" thread here in the marketplace. I find our MacRumors users quite trustworthy.

    Even on Mac osx?

Yes. Refer to the post below.

First you need to download and install the CUDA Drivers from nVidia http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda_get.html

You should already be running the latest version of BOINC.

Once you have done these things, you, in theory are ready to start using your GPU in OSX BOINC to crunch stuff.....

    Why isn't it crunching?

Because no apps inside of BOINC (Seti@home, Aqua@home, etc etc etc) have been re-written to take advantage of CUDA on the mac.

It seems Einstein@home is getting close, but for the moment (As of Feb 6th, 2010) nothing in the OSX BOINC world supports CUDA, or OpenCL. Not to be a downer, but don't expect that to change anytime soon. There just aren't enough volunteers with programming knowledge (or programmers that own the proper hardware to test their knowlege) in this area to make it happen quickly.

Please refer to this post. Only a few number of projects can use CUDA on a mac, Collatz Conjecture is one of them that is available right now

"Sir" I see your point. I just would like to get an iPad at some point and I see an opportunity. I feel that a MacBook air and an iPad are competing. Since I plan on getting a higher end MacBook pro in a few months I'd rather go with the iPad for now.

I understand that people are going to argue the point of getting an iPad or not, but I've decided to go with it. (not to be a dick or anything) and I'd just love some advice on how to best go about doing this transition and having everything setup as efficiently as possible.

Register Hardware notes (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2010/02/18/iphone_gambling/) that Apple has modified the iPhone SDK to specifically allow developers to include sweepstakes and lottery functionality in their App Store applications. The new rule is unambiguous:

"3.3.17 Your Application may include promotional sweepstake or contest functionality provided that You are the sole sponsor of the promotion and that You and Your Application comply with any applicable laws"The report notes that developers must clearly state in any contest rules that Apple is not a sponsor of nor responsible for conducting the promotions.

Also referenced in the report is The KaChing Button (http://appshopper.com/entertainment/the-kaching-button), an application introduced in December that previously only served to allow users to make a novelty "ka-ching" sound. The $0.99 application was updated last week, however, to include sweepstakes functionality under the new SDK terms, allowing the application's developers to offer "up to $1000" per day in prizes over the next month to random winners selected from those pressing the KaChing Button within the application. Daily prizes (http://www.kachingbutton.com/daily-kaching-winner-announcements/) thus far have been at the minimum $100 level and will presumably be increased should revenue from application purchases support such payouts.

I use Photoshop Elements 2.0. Got it for ~$35 off Ebay. I use it to make wallpapers for cell phones and computer. Very easy to crop and cut, resize, color change, add text, combine photos. 3.0 is out now and is probably better.

I was wondering it it were possible to upgrade to 4.0 from 3.2.2 and not the latest 4.3.1. If not, is it possible to update to the latest iOS version that currently has a jailbreak out?

If you have SHSH Blobs save for 4.0 you could update to it, without them saved, then your only choice would be to update to 4.3.1 which as I write this has a tether jailbreak available for it, were you must connect it to a computer and run a program on the computer each and every time you wish/or need to reboot your iPad....

You can save SHSH blobs for it without jail breaking it by running a program call TinyUmbrella, if you Google you can find it, to jailbreak it on a PC run Sn0wBreeze 2.4b1 for 4.3.1.

    Hope that helps...

Not bad. You could however make it more simple and just have 'iPod + Life'. you know like iPod + Nike or whatever it is. :)

Or Microsofts 'Windows XP + an amazing experience' :p Its amazing how original they are.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll upload that as a separate entry, because I like both that and my original.

hello all, i use o2 for my emails on my ipad, why does my ipad collect the same messages over and over again ?. when i delete the emails, the next day when i should collect new ones i also get all the old ones.

Is your o2 mail set to keep a copy of mail on the server? This could cause mail to re-download messages.
